The dose causing 50% mortality (LD50) was shown to be between 25 and 45 kR for radiation and between 0.04 and 0.08% for N-alkyl nitrosoureas. Optimal doses for 13 indica and 4 japonica varieties for the induction of a high frequency of useful mutations were 20 kR and 0.02-0.03%, (for 14 to 18 h), respectively.
