Experimental production of colibacillosis in piglets and its treatment

Normal saline suspension of the Escherichia coli strain '08' was fed to group A (5 colostrum-fed piglets) and group B (5 colostrum-deprived piglets). Group A did not succumb to infection. The piglets from group B developed diarrhoea within 24 to 36 hr with prominent clinical symptoms of colibacillosis. The causal organism could be isolated from the diseased piglets in pure form. The experimental strain of E. coli could not be isolated from the stool of piglets of group A. No typical gross lesions were observed in the piglets of group B, excepting varying degrees of inflammation in the small intestines and congestion in the livers and kidneys. Histopathological changes were vascular congestion, diffuse haemorrhages in the tip of the villi and polymorphonuclear cell infiltration in the submucosae of the small intestines. Vascular congestion and necrotic changes were noticed in the liver and lidneys. Furazolidone @ 50 mg/kg body weight was efficacious against colibacillosis in piglets.
