The use of plant container culture for evaluating accumulation by plants of pollutants from air and soil is assessed in relation to the standard grass culture method. Accumulation indexes for the uptake of Pb, Cd and As from soil and air by Lolium and green cabbage were calculated in an area with a heavy metal burden. The plant/air index for Pb was inconsistent because of the influence of abiotic factors.
