Experimental studies concerning nitrate and nitrite contents in some fodder plants in relation to fertilizer rate

The nitrate and nitrite contents of maize harvested green or at maturity, fodder beet and Lolium perenne/Festuca arundinacea hay given 0-400 kg N as ammonium nitrate/ha were determined. Nitrate and nitrite contents in all fodders increased with increase in N rate. In maize, nitrate contents remained at tolerable levels (<5 g/kg DM). In fodder beet, leaf and petiole nitrate contents exceeded tolerable levels at >200 kg N/ha and root nitrate contents at >300 kg N/ha.
