Experimental studies of the reproductive behaviour of the parasitic copepod Lernaeocera branchialis (Pennellidae)

During the mating sequence, the Lernaeocera branchialis male plays the active part and locates a female in the gill cavity of the host. If the female is immature (chalimus larva), the male takes up a precopula position with its 2nd antenna attached to, or near, the female's frontal filament. At this stage the male occasionally browses on the gill epithelium. When disturbed by other males, the precopulating male reacts with vibrations and holds firmly on to the female with its maxillipeds. However, this reaction does not exclude other males from the female. Immediately after the female's maturation, the male takes up the copula position by grasping the female's trunk with the 2nd antennae just behind the last leg-bearing segment. Within the next 2 h the male bends its trunk in under the female and transfers two spermatophores simultaneously to the female's vulva. Experimental evidence indicates that the male is dependent on stimulation received in the precopula position for the spermatophore release. In the family Pennellidae only the males have maxillipeds, and removal of these appendages prevents males from mating. The maxillipeds may function as mechanoreceptors and are used extensively to make contact with the female during the female's final moult and during mating.
