Factors influencing the development of flight muscles in the carabid beetle, Nebria brevicollis (F.)
Laboratory studies on the carabid Nebria brevicollis showed that all individuals developed their flight muscles fully and showed flight behaviour under optimal conditions. This conclusion is contrary to the general assumption that only suboptimal conditions induce dispersal by flight. Food quantity strongly influenced the development of flight muscles. Daylength was also important and low temperatures (5 degrees C) during the 3rd instar enhanced these effects.
