The effects of weed-associated prey density on the foraging areas of colonies of Solenopsis invicta were assessed in sugarcane in Louisiana during 1986, by marking colonies with the tracer element samarium. Formicids foraged 9% of sampling stations in weed-free areas and 6.4% of those in weedy habitats. The significantly smaller territory size in weedy areas was a result of more dense prey populations, which encouraged greater ant colonization and foraging activity.
