Germination and seedling growth responses of Haloxylon salicornicum to certain salts

In laboratory experiments, effects of 3 salts and their combinations on germination and seedling growth of H. salicornicum were studied. At 2 atm osmotic potential (OP), germination was decreased to 70% in Na2SO4 solution and 90% in NaCl solution; the decrease was negligible in MgSO4 solution. A 50% reduction in germination occurred at 5, 9 and 16 atm OP of the 3 salts, resp. The reduction in seedling length was also greatest with Na2SO4, followed by NaCl and MgSO4.
