Germination rate of maize (Zea mays L.) kernels. II. Relationships with respiration rate and adenosine triphosphate content

Germination rate of maize (Zea mays L.) kernels. II. Relationships with respiration rate and adenosine triphosphate content

South African Journal of Plant and Soil 5(4): 193-195

Seed lots of 12 maize cultivars, selected to represent a broad spectrum of germination rates, were incubated at 25 degrees C in the dark. Rates of oxygen uptake were determined after 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 h. Germination rate was positively correlated with seed oxygen uptake rate and embryo ATP content after 6 and 12 h incubation. Respiration rate was positively correlated with embryo water content, and seed and embryo ATP content at these sampling times.
