Rice Nipponbare and Toyominori (Japanese), Mitsuyou No. 29 and Suigen No. 258 (Korean) and the hybrid Akenohoshi were sown at 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 cm depth after coating the seeds with calcium peroxide and the soil surface was flooded to 2 cm depth. Seed germination and seedling emergence decreased with increasing sowing depth. Roots of Japanese cultivars penetrated the soil better than those of Korean cultivars.
