Heat and mass exchange in the industrial extractors of beet sugar manufacture (review)

Diffusers and scalders common at Russian beet sugar factories are classified according to the types of flow and heat transfer occurring in them, features of suitable temperature profiles are indicated and performances of some common items of equipment are discussed. The heat transfer coefficient in a DDS twin-scroll diffuser, regardless of size, is typically 16.5-17.5 W m-2K-1 at the head, decreasing to 3.8-4 W m-2K-1 in the main part.
