Heated irrigation cold protection



Proceedings of the Florida State Horticultural Society 102: 64-69



A small, oil-fuelled irrigation water heater was used to increase the temperature of the water above that of the source and to study its effect on the cold protection potential during the frost of 25-26 Feb. 1989, in a citrus orchard near Gainesville. Heating the irrigation water as much as 100 degrees F above ambient water temperature of 60 degrees provided an average increase over an hour of 61.2 degrees , but there was little effect on leaf temperature 10 ft from the sprinkler heads.
