Heave and slope failure in an excavation into residual soil

Heave and slope failure in an excavation into residual soil

Geotechnique 40(1): 133-137

The effects of relict structure on both slope stability and rate of swelling in an excavation into a Malaysian soil was investigated. Results indicated that relict discontinuities create relatively high permeabilities in most soils, producing a risk of rapid heave in addition to that of rock type slope failures. These two phenomena can also interact, the slope instability results in increased or accelerated heave potential by improving the recharge of the swelling zone.
