Heavy metal contamination of soils under power line pylons

The heavy metal concentrations in soils under 14 pylons of various power lines were investigated. The top soils (0-10 cm) under all pylons are contaminated with zinc in concentrations up to 372 mg/kg (HNO3-extract). Lead contaminations were detected only under pylons of an old line (> 60 years). Contaminations with Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni were not found. The concentrations of Zn and Pb decrease sharply with increasing distance to the pylon. Usually, in distances > 5 m no burden of heavy metals in soils was found, and background values were reached in distances > 10 m. Thus, the pylons caused only minor contamination of soils.
