Heidelberg has tested them. Viola wittrockiana hybrids outdoors

Gb + Gw, Gartnerborse und Gartenwelt 89(24): 1124-1126

Data are reported for 44 cultivars, including 17 F1 and F2 hybrids and 2 synthetics grown in the open in 1988-89 with or without the protection of vlies. The hybrids generally flowered a week earlier than the pure-line cultivars in autumn and a week later in spring. Among the most successful pure-line cultivars were Icequeen, Lacks, Weseler Eis, Bochumer Riesen and Aurora.
