Hematocrit, hemoglobin and iron status of North American college females living at an elevation of 2183 m

Two studies examined iron status of females living at high altitude. In Study I, hematocrit (Hct) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels were determined in 199 menstruating females living in Laramie, Wyoming (elevation 2,183 m). The indices were higher than values reported for females living at sea level. In Study II, Hct, Hb, serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) transferrin saturation (TS) and serum ferritin (SF) levels were determined in two sub-groups of females, with one group using oral contraceptive agents (OCA). Both groups demonstrated higher Hct and Hb levels than counterparts living at sea level. Oral contraceptive agent users exhibited lower mean SF, Hct and Hb levels and a higher mean TIBC than the non-OCA users.
