Hepatic carnitine and triglyceride lowering effect of dietary pectin in the rat

Hepatic carnitine and triglyceride lowering effect of dietary pectin in the rat

Nutrition Reports International 39(4): 861-866

The hepatic and serum triglyceride as well as hepatic carnitine concentrations were analyzed in rats fed the purified diet free-from fiber source or the diet containing varying amounts (1, 3, 6 and 10%) of citrus pectin. Both hepatic and serum triglyceride concentration decreased as the dietary levels of pectin increased. The significant reductions of these parameters were already noted in rats fed the diets containing as low as 1 or 3% pectin. Cholesterol concentrations in the serum but not in the liver also decreased in rats fed pectin but with much lesser extents. In this situation where dietary pectin exerted a potent triglyceride lowering effect, hepatic carnitine concentrations were in non way affected by the dietary fiber.
