D. farinae allergen was assayed by RAST from 3 sources from each of 6 homes in Marshfield, Wisconsin. These sources were: (1) vacuum cleaner bags, (2) stuffed (toy) animals and (3) air filters. An additional 14 vacuum cleaner bags and 4 stuffed animals were also assayed. Detectable levels of D. farinae antigen were found in all extracts. Although data from (1) varied 5-fold and from (3) varied only 2-fold, these paired samples from the 6 homes showed a correlation (0.70), even though with so small a set of samples this was not statistically significant. It nevertheless suggests that sampling of this kind might, if extended further, serve for allergen exposure evaluation.
