Eleven genotypes of V. radiata and 5 of V. mungo were gamma -irradiated with doses ranging from 5 to 8 kR. The frequency of chlorophyll mutations in the M2 indicated that 30 kR was optimal. The LD50 was ~60 kR. Four mungbean mutants released in 1986 yielded 30-40% more than their parents and matured in 55-70 days. In blackgram several early mutants with erect growth habit were induced in local cultivars.
