In a solution culture trial under controlled conditions in 1984, peas Stehgolt were supplied with (a) 0.1, (b) 0.3375, (c) 0.8 or (d) 1.5625 mg atom N (4.0, 13.7, 32.0 or 62.5 mg NH4NO3)/litre solution until flowering began, after which half the plants received no N. Root, shoot and pod DW of uninoculated plants in (b) were 71.2, 71.2 and 64.5%, resp., of those of Rhizobium-inoculated plants. Root, shoot and pod DW increased with increasing N rate.
