International trade in agricultural products and the Uruguay round of negotiations within the General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade (GATT)

Following a brief outline of the important factors affecting the development of world agricultural production and trade in the 1970s, the main reasons behind the stagnation of world agricultural trade over the period 1980-86 are discussed. The aims of the Uruguay round of GATT negotiations are described with regard to the move towards greater market orientation in world agricultural production and trade.
