Studies in chestnut orchards at 4 localities showed that differences between individual trees in the proportion of fruits with a full complement of nuts were relatively stable in different years. This was due to the presence of inherently high- and low-yielding individuals. The variability in the proportion of filled fruits was negatively correlated with stamen length and 100-nut weight at one locality.
