Isolation and purification of a sesquiterpene lactone from the leaves of Parthenium hysterophorus L. - its allelopathic and cytotoxic effects

The isolation and purification of the allelopathic principle from P. hysterophorus leaves is described. The compound was identified by NMR and HPLC as parthenin (C15 H18 O4). Parthenin at 1000 p.p.m. reduced wheat seed germination percentage, shoot and root length and biomass by 760%, 68%, 82% and 81%, resp., after 72 h germination. At 250, 500 and 1000 p.p.m. parthenin had no stimulatory effects on wheat seed germination and growth.
