Symptoms of this disease (caused by Helminthosporium turcicum are described and illustrated, and compared with those of other diseases of maize in Austria. Survival, transmission, infection and development of the pathogen are briefly outlined. Cultural control measures are described. Explanations are given for the epidemic which occurred in Steiermark, Austria, in 1987.
