Lernaeosis in farmed salmonids

Lernaeosis in farmed salmonids

Vestnik Zoologii ( 1): 65-67

Outbreaks of infestations by Lernaea elegans occurred in salmonid fish farms in the Kiev region, Ukrainian SSR, in 1986-88. Prevalence reached 100% in some ponds, with an average intensity of 37 adult crustaceans per fish. Up to 200 copepodite stages per fish were present on the skin surface and gills. A host mortality rate of near to 100% was recorded. To prevent the spread of infection to new stock, the diseased fish were destroyed.
