The ability of the les1 (lesion) allele of maize to enhance hyphal growth of certain fungal pathogens, but apparently without altering the basic resistance reaction determined by major resistance loci, was studied in maize lines infected with Bipolaris maydis (Cochliobolus heterostrophus) race O, C. heterostrophus race 1 or 2, or Exserohilum turcicum Observations of the symptoms suggested that larger lesions on infested Les1 plants are not simply due to wound induction of Les1 expression.
