Measurement of apple pollination efficiency by honey bees hived in a prototypic pollination unit

Measurement of apple pollination efficiency by honey bees hived in a prototypic pollination unit

Research Circular, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (295): 32-37

Experimental pollination units were constructed of expanded polystyrene foam 2.54 cm thick, and the foraging activities of bees from colonies housed in these units (a) and control colonies from standard hives (b) were compared at 2 localities. The colonies from (a) and (b) averaged 19.0 and 16.2 pollen forages/minute, respectively. Control colonies started to forage earlier in the day but colonies from (a) worked for longer in the afternoon. Both types were least active from 14.00 to 16.00 h.
