Museums

Museums

Cultural Trends ( 4): 1-24

There is currently an unprecedented level of interest in museums in the UK, in terms of their functions, their financing and their purpose. The article gives statistical information on UK museums. There are no definitive figures on how many museums there are in the UK, nor on the dates of their foundation. However, a 1987 report identified 2131 museums, 48% of which operated outside the public sector. Most recent growth has been in the independent sector.
