Mutation induction for domestication of Cuphea: effects of gamma rays

Mutants with improved seed retention, seed shattering being a hindrance to the utilization of Cuphea as an oil seed crop, were obtained in autogamous C. aperta and allogamous C. lanceolata and C. procumbens following EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate) treatment. The improved trait was only expressed completely, however, in C. aperta. In further experiments, dry seeds of C. tolucana (n = 12) and C. wrightii (n = 22) were exposed to 0-60 kR gamma radiation.
