N2-fixation in newly introduced barley cultivars adaptable to arid conditions in Egypt

In field trials in NW Egypt, 8 USA barley cultivars and the local barley Mariouty were inoculated with Klebsiella pneumoniae or Azotobacter chroococcum + A. vinelandii. Cultivar Shonuncier I and Shonuncier II gave the highest stem DW/plant at 140 days of 10.86 and 10.40 g, resp., compared with 4.96 g in Mariouty. Inoculation with Azotobacter increased stem DW/plant in 4 cultivars and inoculation with K. pneumoniae increased stem DW in 5 cultivars.
