N2-fixing Cyanobacteria as nitrogen biofertilizer-a study with the isolate Anabaena azollae

The performance of Anabaena azollae (isolated from Azolla filiculoides) in relation to its application as N-fertilizer was investigated. The isolate grew relatively fast and fixed nitrogen over wide ranges of pH (6.0-9.0), temperature (20-40 degrees C) and with 1% (w/v) NaCl present in the growth medium. Maximum specific growth rate (0.0675 h-1) and nitrogenase activity (32 mu mol C2H4 per mg chlorophyll per hour) occurred at pH 7.0.
