NaCl dependent growth rate of normal and habituated sugarbeet calli, ethylene production and peroxidase activity

Growth rates of normal and habituated sugarbeet calluses were increased by adding NaCl to the basal culture media up to 4 and 1 g/l, resp. These optimum growth rates corresponded with the lowest ethylene productions and peroxidase activities. Reduced growth rates of the calluses accompanied by high ethylene production and high peroxidase activity in the absence of NaCl might be as a result of chemical stresses, as in halophytic plants (e.g. Suaeda maritima) deprived of NaCl.
