National parks for Scotland? The designations debate



Ecos 10(3): 13-16



The cases for and against the establishment of national parks in Scotland are considered. The complexity of the issues involved is highlighted (issues of upland land use, conservation versus development, tourism promotion, attraction of investment, creation of jobs, creation of unnecessary levels of administration, etc.), and the arguments for improvement of existing mechanisms as opposed to the creation of a new land designation body are discussed.
