The visible negative effects of tourism on the alpine landscape have caused conventional objectives and methods of nature and landscape conservation to be revised, with the aim of achieving a balance between ecological and environmental aspects and economic and social objectives. Using the Davos landscape project in Switzerland as an example, as well as available data from previous MAB projects, a conservation concept for tourist mountain regions is developed. This aims at safeguarding the ecosystem while, at the same time, identifying and developing leisure and tourist resorts and promoting landscape variety.
