On-farm testing of meat performance of Tsigai lambs and their crossbreds with the North Caucasus Mutton-Wool and Suffolk breeds

Abstract
Data were obtained on 38 Tsigai, 39 Tsigai X (North Caucasus Mutton-Wool X Tsigai), 16 North Caucasus Mutton-Wool X (North Caucasus Mutton-Wool X Tsigai) and 18 Suffolk X Tsigai lambs. Birth weight averaged 2.86, 2.97, 2.98 and 4.26 kg (P<0.01) resp., the difference between male and female lambs being non-significant. That of twin-born and single-born lambs averaged 3.14 and 3.39 kg resp., the difference being significant. Daily gain from 90 days of age to 35 kg (approx. 200 days) averaged 164, 161, 154 and 196 g in the 4 groups resp. (P<0.01), 185 g in the ram lambs and 153 g in the ewe lambs (P<0.01), and 168 g in single-born and 170 g in the twin-born lambs. The consumption of FU/kg gain averaged 3.40, 3.32, 3.93 and 2.93 resp. in malemale of the 4 genotypes and 3.81, 4.48, 4.31 and 3.55 in femalefemale. Carcass weight averaged 15.8, 15.6, 15.5 and 15.8 kg in the 4 genotypes, 15.7 and 15.6 kg in the 2 sexes, and 15.6 and 15.8 kg in singles and twins. Dressing percentage averaged 45.5, 44.6, 44.8 and 47.2 in the 4 genotypes, 44.1 and 46.9 (P<0.01) in the 2 sexes, and 45.2 and 45.8 in singles and twins.
