The following characters were recommended as selection criteria in breeding heterotic hybrids for yield: magnitude of photosynthetic potential, rate of photosynthesis of the flag leaf during the reproductive period, net photosynthetic production, daily dry matter increment, amount of dry matter of the ear, stem, flag leaf and flag leaf sheath at grain formation, ratio of ear to leaf biomass during flowering, coefficient of ear growth increment during grain formation, and ear biomass at the end of grain filling.
