Phytol and the breakdown of chlorophyll in senescent leaves

Phytol and the breakdown of chlorophyll in senescent leaves

Journal of Plant Physiology 135(4): 428-432

Three forms of phytol were analysed in senescent leaves of three plant species: free phytol, phytol in chlorophyll and phytol esterified outside chlorophyll. During breakdown of chlorophyll very little free phytol is produced whilst substantial proportions of total phytol appear to be esterified outside chlorophyll. Rather small proportions of phytol are lost in leaves of parsley (16%) and barley (24%); in Festuca pratensis as much as 35% of phytol disappear during foliar senescence. The retention of chlorophyll in senescent leaves of a non-yellowing genotype of meadow fescue is associated with reduced quantities of non-chlorophyll esters of phytol and of free phytol. In F. pratensis vitamin E in increases in the initial phase of foliar senescence and then declines. In parsley as well as in barley foliar senescence under anoxic conditions results in the accumulation of dephytylated species of chlorophyll.
