Plantlet regeneration from in vitro culture of young spikes of wheat and its variation

Young spikes of 11 genotypes of winter wheat excised at glume differentiation were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 2 mg 2,4-D/litre. All 11 genotypes had a callus induction frequency of 100% but plantlet regeneration ranged from 73.7 to 100%. Regenerants from all genotypes except Debaimang had low fertility. Of 219 regenerated plantlets, 16.9% were sterile, with 35% sterile among those from Fengkang 8 and 34.8% from genotype 8425.
