In a field experiment in 1984 at Mons-en-Chaussee, maize Dea was sown to give a plant density of 67 500 or 120 000 plants/ha. A few days before flowering, plots at the higher density were thinned to produce a plant density similar to that of the lower density plots. Plant DW at flowering was lower in the thinned stand than in that sown to give a lower plant density, but grain yield at harvest was similar.
