Restricted maximum likelihood estimates of variance components from multitrait sire models with large number of fixed effects

An expectation maximization algorithm to maximize multitrait REML equations was formally described. A computing strategy based on absorption of main fixed effects that allows unequal design matrices for different traits was presented with a small numerical example. Convergence of the method was compared to Henderson's EM-like algorithm by using dairy cattle reproduction data. Convergence rate determined as a round to round change in variance component solutions was about the same regardless of which algorithm was used.
