Restricted maximum likelihood estimation of variance components for multiple traits with missing observations and an application to beef cattle

Restricted maximum likelihood estimation of variance components for multiple traits with missing observations and an application to beef cattle

Dissertation Abstracts International B, Sciences and Engineering 49(10): 4071

Obtaining restricted maxima using non-linear methods based on 1st derivatives requires repeatedly obtaining BLUPs and associated prediction error variances, given a current estimate of the variance components. Alternative strategies for deriving solutions to mixed model equations are presented. These include the use of a sequential transformation to uncorrelate residual effects.
