The preference of adults of Thrips tabaci for 4 varieties of cabbage was tested in the field in New York in 1985 by putting uninfested potted plants next to plots of wheat, oats or lucerne as the insect was moving out of these crops, and in the laboratory by placing adults in circular plastic boxes and allowing them to choose between leaf discs from the heads of the same 4 varieties.
