Screening for resistance to Sclerotinia crown and stem rot



Report of the thirty first North American Alfalfa Improvement Conference, held at Beltsville, Maryland, USA, 19-23 June 1988: 103-104



An adapted method for screening lucerne for resistance to S. trifoliorum is described. Sterile grain medium is prepared by autoclaving a soaked grain mixture (1 : 1 oats and wheat by volume). Plugs of agar with mycelium from actively growing cultures are transferred to this medium and incubated for 21 days at 15 degrees C. Four-week-old lucerne seedlings are inoculated at a rate of 20 ml per 175 cmsuperscript 2 of soil surface.
