In studies (1971-75) of the effect of different plant distributions in the horizontal plane on the performance of 5-6 varieties in southern Sweden, all varieties, despite their marked differences in habit (ranging from erect to prostrate), gave higher grain yields when plants had greater space in the horizontal plane. Grain quality characters were not much affected by spacing. The variety Julia had the highest protein content.
