Selection of biotypes of green rice leafhopper and genetic analysis for the resistance in rice

When second or third instar nymphs of Nephotettix cincticeps were fed on resistant varieties the population decreased markedly in the first generation but then steadily increased. Two biotypes were selected on the resistant varieties Aichi 42 and Saikai 182 and were named Aichi 42 colony and Saikai 182 colony, respectively. No resistance-breaking biotype was developed on Norin-PL5 although 10 000 nymphs were used.
