Selection of source material for breeding early maize hybrids in the north-western steppe of the Ukrainian SSR

In the collection of inbred lines studied, early ones were more susceptible to lodging than midseason ones. In ear length the lines fell into 2 groups, 10.1-14 cm and 14.1-16 cm. IK150-3, IK155-2, VIR44 and Zh128-5 had moderately long ears. Lines with a high 1000-grain weight (226-237.4 g) were V8zm, Ukh32, Ukh545 and ZhV1. Fertility restorer and sterility maintainer lines for the Moldavian, Texas and Charrua types of cytoplasmic male sterility are listed.
