Socio-economic differentiation among African peasants: evidence from Acholi, Southern Sudan

Socio-economic differentiation among African peasants: evidence from Acholi, Southern Sudan

Journal of International Development 2(1): 77-109

The paper is concerned with the nature and extent of inequality and poverty in the southern Sudan, an area which has yet to experience any form of modern economic growth. The nature of differences in household well-being in Acholi is examined, set in the context of the Chayanov model of peasant behaviour. Inequality in terms of cash incomes, food security and asset holdings is examined using regression analysis.
