In a variegated apomictic plant (AM5) obtained in the M2 after gamma irradiation of seedlings of a 38-chromosome Zea X Tripsacum apomictic hybrid (20 maize chromosomes + 18 Tripsacum), pollination with the tetraploid maize Purple tester and anthocyaninless marker BI1 resulted in somatic segregation in the apomictic progeny, giving variegated, mottled and green (phenotypically normal) plants in various ratios.
