Studies on digestibility of the crude nutrients and amino acids of barley and oats with colostomized hens and cocks

Studies on digestibility of the crude nutrients and amino acids of barley and oats with colostomized hens and cocks

Archiv fuer Gefluegelkunde 53(4): 151-156

The apparent digestibility of the crude nutrients, the basic and sulphur-containing amino acids of barley and oats was determined in comparative digestibility tests with colostomized hens and cocks. The content of crude protein and crude fat in the dry matter amounts to 14.8% and 3.9% in barley and 12.% and 45.5% in oats. The content of lysine as well as the thiamino acids in the curde protein of barley amounts to 3.9% and 3.0% and to 3.7% and 4.0% in the crude protein of oats. Apart from cystine, the excreted quantities of crude nutrients and amino acids were balanced. Compared to the barley ration, a lower lysine content and a higher cystine content were detected in the crude protein of faeces after the application of the oats ration. The apparent digestibility of the crude protein, the crude fat and the N-free extract substances of barley amounted to 82.9%, 55.5%, and 88.8% in hens and to 82.5%, 58.9% and 88.9% in cocks. The corresponding data for oats were 78.0%, 78.0% and 76.3% in hens and 78.2%, 76.2% and 76.0% in cocks. The possible causes for the considerable differences between the crude nutrients of barley and oats in the apparent digestibility of the 5 tested amino acids were significant for the two thiamino acids. A sex-specific influence of the substances of barley or of the high crude fibre content on the apparent digestibility of crude nutrients and of basic amino acids can be excluded.
