Abstract
The existing confused situation of rice classification is reviewed and the relative classifications of Indonesian indica types and japonica, nuda and intermediate forms are discussed. Arguments to support the division of O. sativa into indica and japonica only are put forward and implications for the study of the origin and evaluation of rice are considered.
